Tabarca Island

Tabarca is the only inhabited island in the Comunitat Valenciana and is located opposite the city of Alicante, eleven nautical miles away and close to the cape of Santa Pola. It is approximately 1,800 metres long and has a maximum width of 400 metres.

In the past, its coasts were a refuge for Berber pirates. The walls surrounding the town centre have been declared a Historic-Artistic Site and an Asset of Cultural Interest.

BEACHES

Alicante has a large number of beaches that are one of its main tourist attractions. Year after year they are recognised by the European Union with Blue Flags, which give them a well-deserved international prestige; they are considered to be among the best beaches on the Mediterranean coast.

San Juan beach, the coves of Cabo de las Huertas, Almadraba beach, Albufereta beach, Postiguet beach, Saladares-Urbanova beach and Tabarca Island.

GASTRONOMY

Rice, the basic ingredient of all Valencian cuisine, is the main ingredient in a wide variety of recipes, and it is true to say that many other ingredients are used in the preparation of typical recipes.

The Mediterranean Sea supplies the markets with fresh fish and seafood, and Alicante’s market gardens fill the fruit and vegetable stalls with colour, smell and flavour to make the most traditional rice recipes of Alicante’s gastronomy.

CASTLES

The imposing presence of the Mediterranean Sea sometimes makes us forget the extensive mountainous strip that runs through the province of Alicante. Hills, mountain ranges and hills that were once used to build imposing fortresses, as defensive forts and lookouts, which today make up one of the most beautiful tourist routes of castles in Spain.

A total of 230 enclosures dot this territory of radical orography and a history of peoples, culture and borders.
